This post is for my fellow nurses that love nursing. I have a question for you.
Where do you want to be in your career in 5 to 10 years?
As a long-time nurse that has been committed to expanding and enhancing nursing practice and one who is ready to turn the corner into retirement; I would like to pose another question to you. Are you ready? Here it is. I would like to know if you are a nurse who is also committed to forwarding nursing far into the future as a vibrant surviving profession. Is that you? Any takers?
Recently, on my way home from work; I stopped at a park in my area. There was an elaborate monkey bar play area made of the usual metal dome but also had huge rope nets, a plastic recumbent swing, and wood ladders. The tiny children there were climbing without fear. As I watched, I thought, boy, we never had that kind of equipment when I was little. It’s really cool!
The more I watched the more I reflected how the times change and specifically within nursing. I began to wonder where nursing would be in 10 years given the current health care system that is sandwiched between (just a few):
On one side:
Legislation requiring extensive regulations that are costly in many areas
Tightening of funds and reimbursement to hospitals for services rendered
Administrations that lack the ability to enforce facility standards that govern the work environment
On the other side:
The workforce requiring increased salaries
Lack of qualified staff
Availability of qualified staff but unhealthy work environments causing loss of good staff
Many forces are also causing distress for nurses are:
Need to get certified in a specialty
Need for higher degree of education
Being bullied by peers or other co-workers
Pressure from administration to work more hours
So, what makes you want to continue to work hard in your job? What is it inside you that pushes you to strive in your profession?
Have you decided? That is, have you decided what you will be doing in 10 years. What do you want nursing to look like? What are you willing to commit to so nursing is still a desired profession and esteemed by the public? Of course, everyone is not going to be equally committed because our priorities are different. Nevertheless, we all have a role to play and expertise to contribute. I believe that everyone will contribute to some degree depending on their own goals. Each person needs to be aware of what their boundaries and limitations are while taking intentional steps to fulfill their goals.
